KARMEIN CHAN

Karmein Chan, 13, was abducted and murdered in 1991. Karmein Chan was kidnapped from her Templestowe home in Melbourne on April 13, 1991 at about 9.15pm.

Karmein, her younger sister and a man wearing a balaclava were attacked by a man while her parents were working at a Chinese Restaurant in Eltham.

He forced Karmein’s sisters into an wardrobe before fleeing along with Karmein.
Karmein was found dead at Edgars Creek in Thomastown on April 9, 1992.

A postmortem revealed that she was shot.

The media have dubbed her killer “Mr Cruel”, despite an extensive investigation by detectives from the Spectrum Taskforce.

The police have searched more than 30,000 homes, interviewed 27,000 individuals and checked over 10,000 tips in relation to Karmein Chan. They are hoping that someone within the community has the crucial piece of information which will aid in solving this crime.

Stephen Clark, homicide squad detective inspector, said that this unsolved crime has had a devastating effect on the Chan Family.

Detective Inspector Clark stated, “We hope someone with this vital piece of information comes forward to help solve the Karmein Chan Murder and give closure for the Chan family.”

He said, “We encourage them to contact the police.”
