A man has been arrested following an incident which unfolded in Victoria's east today.

Dandenong detectives attended an address in Rogers Street Dandenong around 10.30 this morning to execute a search warrant as part of an ongoing investigation into stolen cars.

When police arrived at the front door, they were confronted by a man allegedly armed with a firearm.

Police attempted to negotiate with the man for some time but he refused to cooperate.

Around 11.30am the man jumped into an allegedly stolen white ute with a 20-year-old woman known to him and drove from the address.

Police followed the man at a distance while the airwing monitored the vehicle's progress.

The man drove from Dandenong through Ferntree Gully, Morwell, Yarragon, Moe, Traralgon and Bairnsdale with police following and monitoring the situation.

He dumped the initial vehicle in Moe and stole a number of vehicles, pulling out the drivers and dumping the cars as he went.

He crashed one of the allegedly stolen vehicles in Newman Crescent, Traralgon where his female passenger was taken into police custody.

Near Bairnsdale the man jumped into the backseat of a car and ordered the driver to travel east bound towards Lakes Entrance.

Police intercepted the man on the Princes Highway at Swan Reach around 2.30pm.

The 25-year-old Endeavour Hills man was arrested and taken into police custody.

No one was injured.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for anyone who might have seen the driver to make contact with investigators.

Anyone with any info should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
