Investigators have been told a man was taking up two seats on the Flemington Road tram and making verbal violent threats.
The victim told the man to stop, before he was assaulted several times.
Bystanders intervened to stop the incident before the offender deliberately broke the victim’s glasses and left the tram in North Melbourne.
The victim suffered injuries requiring hospital treatment.
The offender is perceived to be of African appearance, aged in his 20’s, 183cm tall, a wiry build with black shaved hair.
At the time of the offence he was wearing a cap, a light brown jacket and dark coloured pants.
Police believe several passengers observed the assault, and that other commuters may have filmed the incident.
