Police have released images of a damaged motorcycle found on the Hume Freeway near Longwood on Sunday and continue to search for the rider of a motorcycle.

Police were alerted to the incident by a passer-by who came across the scene, on the freeway near the intersection of Longwood-Ruffy Road, just after 6am.

An extensively damaged red and white Honda CRB 900 motorcycle was found lying on the road, with skid marks and debris, including money and one shoe, stretching along the bitumen for about 100 metres.

Investigators believe the motorcyclist struck a wombat causing him to lose control of the bike.

Registration details of the motorcycle have been checked but have been of no assistance to police in finding the rider.

Police believe the rider would have suffered serious injuries in the crash and are appealing for him, or anyone who may have picked him up, to contact police.

Police have released images of the motorcycle in the hope someone can recognise it.
