Police believe a tipper truck with a bob-cat loaded on the back was parked on the side of Edgars Road with its hazard lights on when a van has driven into the back of it about 6.50am.
The driver of the van, a 53-year-old man, was trapped for a short time before he was freed and taken to hospital.
The Broadmeadows man died in hospital yesterday.
The investigation continues and Greensborough Highway Patrol members are appealing for witnesses.
