On Wedesday, 30 September, the Herald Sun printed an article that claimed Victoria Police had 'bungled' attempts to extradite Puneet Puneet who fled Australia after pleading guilty to culpable driving. This is far from the truth.
Victoria Police have been working very hard to return Mr Puneet to Australia. The investigation has been complex, protracted and has involved a number of agencies who have all shown a dedication to ensure that this man faces court.
Whilst we are keen that this occurs in a timely manner, the most critical part is to ensure we get the process right. Experience has shown that even small mistakes can jeopardise the success of any extradition. We have been seeking advice from the Commonwealth Attorney General’s office to ensure the paperwork and processes are correct to give us the best chance of success.
This is not a simple matter of jumping on a plane and bringing him back to Australia. The reality is we must be meticulous in our preparation. We know through experience that we may only get one chance to get this right.
Whilst I understand the wish for a rapid resolution, I ask that people understand that we are progressing this matter methodically and with care. We remain absolutely focused on doing what needs to be done to bring Mr Puneet to justice.
Our Major Collision Investigation Unit is highly skilled, committed and thorough in what they do. They have shown on countless occasions that they have the ability and resolve to bring this matter to a conclusion.
