With the release of the 2008-09 Commissioner for Law Enforcement Data Security's (CLEDS) annual report this week, there continues to be some criticism about the handling of confidential and sensitive information within Victoria Police.

Victoria Police takes information security very seriously and we have been and will continue to work closely with the CLEDS to ensure we achieve best practice in this area.

In the past any member found being reckless with information has been through the disciplinary system and we will continue to be vigilant in this area.

It's important to remember that the issue is not just about our IT systems, but more about changing the attitudes and educating our members to handle information appropriately and correctly.

In response to one of the recommendations made by the CLEDS, Victoria Police will soon appoint a Director of Information Management and Security whose primary role will be to address issues around information security.

Victoria Police has been working hard to address all the CLEDS recommendations but as there are quite a number of them we have been unable to address all of them at this stage but we are taking steps to enable us to implement the recommendations as soon as possible, and the appointment of the Director of Information Management and Security will significantly assist us in doing this.
