Chief Commissioner Simon Overland has responded to media accusations that police had been passing secret files on protest groups to the company behind the proposed desalination plant in Wonthaggi.

Mr Overland stated that absolutely no personal information had been provided to the company, and that media commentators had misunderstood the contents of the MOU struck between Victoria Police, the Government and AquaSure.

He said: "This (story) is a beat-up. The MOU makes it quite clear that we can only provide information in accordance with the law and in accordance with the Privacy Act. It does need to be re-written in a way that people can understand it and that it can't be misinterpreted as it has been in this case.

"This is not about releasing people's private information, the legislation won't allow it. Community safety and the protection of property at the site has been and will remain our number one priority."

Victoria Police has a good relationship with those protest groups involved, where the majority of people have expressed their opinions in a peaceful, lawful and cooperative manner. We hope to maintain a strong relationship with protest groups so that any protests are conducted safely and within the law.
