Victoria Police Response to incorrect media reports of supporting Indian travel warnings

Victoria Police has this morning responded to a media report that it has backed an Indian travel warning in relation to students about an increase in violent crime.

This is not correct and Victoria Police is concerned that its comments were taken out of context.

In its response Victoria Police was acknowledging, as it has in the past, that there has been an unfortunate increase in robberies, assaults and knife crime in general.

Again it has been well documented that Victoria Police has also been concerned about the rise in these types of crimes involving Indian students.

We recognised this trend more than 18 months ago and have been working with the Indian community to deal with these unacceptable crimes.

Today's first knife search under new legislation in Footscray is one of a number of initiatives being undertaken by Victoria Police in tackling these issues in the broader community.

Despite these acknowledgements, Victoria Police still believes Victoria remains a safe place to live and visit and it is important that we keep this issue in context.
