Deputy Commissioner (Road Policing) Ken Lay responds this morning to reports on radio about the effectiveness of the Hoon Hotline.

"It is important for people to recognise the role the hotline has played in helping police remove dangerous drives from our roads.

“The Hoon Hotline was set up in May 2008 to act as a central phone line where community members could provide information to police about hoon driving in their neighbourhoods.

“The hotline is run through Crime Stoppers who do a great job of collecting large amounts of information from callers about dangerous driving behaviour.

"Victoria Police is now working with Crime Stoppers to develop ways we can capture data based on calls to the hoon hotline which directly lead to vehicle impoundments. The information collected is stored for intelligence purposes, and assists police in identifying and ultimately targeting dangerous drivers.

“Our Traffic Management Unit members are passionate about making our roads safer, and let me be clear that we take these calls seriously and we act on the information provided via the hotline.

“Police operations targeting hoon driving are based on intelligence, some of which is compiled from calls to the Hoon Hotline.

"Since the hoon hotline opened, more than 7,800 information reports have been filed from over 40,000 calls from the public. There is no doubt these information reports have assisted police to impound the 10,000-plus hoons that we have.

"If you are on the roads and see dangerous driving behaviour and require immediate police response call 000."

Deputy Commissioner (Road Policing) Ken Lay
