Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland has this morning responded to claims of police mistreatment detailed in a yet to be released report by the Springvale Monash Legal Service, Fitzroy Legal Service and Western Suburbs Legal.

Whilst Mr Overland was unable to respond to the specifics of the unreleased report, he reiterated that all members are expected to take a fair and professional approach when policing the community.

He said a lot of work was being done to strengthen relationships and understanding between all multicultural communities, not the least the African community. This was having a positive impact and Mr Overland said police would continue to work to address any tensions.

Mr Overland said whilst a majority of police officers do the right thing, racism in any form would not be tolerated. He added that if any police officer was found to be acting in an inappropriate manner they would be decisively dealt with.
