Policing is a 24-hour job. Crime unfortunately occurs at all times of the day. The public transport system is no different. That is why we have police working from early morning and throughout the night across the public transport system. While operations such as Barracuda see police patrolling the train system during peak periods targeting crime such as property damage - other campaigns such as Operation Trojan and Omni focus on evening hours targeting anti-social behaviour, assaults and weapons offences with a much larger and specialised police response. We use intelligence to determine where and when we place our police across the public transport system – and what response is required. This is a constantly changing environment and the community can be assured that public transport policing is certainly not 9 to 5. Operation Barracuda is just one of a suite of operations that is conducted across the public transport system to tackle issues of crime and anti-social behaviour. We have 250 transit officers dedicated to public transport safety in Victoria and that number is about to be boosted by a further 100 officers. The additional members will provide us with the flexibility to conduct larger and more operations across the system. Victoria Police is totally committed to creating a public transport system which is safe for all users at all times of day and night and I am very proud of the efforts of the Transit members in working toward this goal.
