Victoria Police has today responded to a story on the front page of the Age claiming that the force's Security Intelligence Group (SIG) is to be axed. Assistant Commissioner Jeff Pope, who has led a review of intelligence functions within Victoria Police, said: "Any suggestion that Victoria is softening its security and intelligence capabilities is ill-informed. We are not. "The current review of the SIG is focussed on structure and processes only. Our aim is to enhance and strengthen our service - not diminish it. "To be clear, there will be no reduction in manpower or resources committed to the functions currently performed by the SIG. "We will not comment further on this issue as discussion around security matters is both inappropriate and irresponsible." VP11441/2011 |
