VICTORIA POLICE LAUNCHES FACEBOOK MESSENGER

Friday, 01 February 2019 10:10

For the first time in Australian law enforcement history, social media users will be able to access breaking news and safety advice during emergencies, through Victoria Police’s Facebook Messenger.

Launching on 11 February 2019, a daily summary of the top policing stories will be sent directly to subscriber’s mobiles, giving them the choice of skimming headlines or reading an entire story.

Alerts and safety advice will also be delivered during critical incidents and emergencies through the free app.

“Messaging apps have seen massive global growth over the past few years, especially among younger users, and offer a promising opportunity for Victoria Police to reach new audiences,” Victoria Police Reactive Online Communications Manager Mark Bayly said.

“Our goal is to make Victoria Police a part of people’s daily lives, providing daily news and a single source of advice and information in times of emergency.”

Each month more than 12 million people in Australia use the Facebook Messenger app, while globally, 2 billion messages are sent. The launch of the free app means Victoria Police will be able to reach a wider audience, keeping the community safe and informed.
